College graduates have more going for them than ever before. They are finally starting to see an overall increase in securing wanted positions.

Naturally you foresee yourself advancing in your career or company. Almost everyone strives for career advancement at some point because people want to see their hard work pay off both in more desirable positions and higher salaries.

Some people, though, no matter how hard they work, never seem to experience positive career movement. The cause isn’t necessarily because they aren’t qualified; rather, they are more likely unsure of how to advance their career to an executive position.

Even if you haven’t been directly affected by the economic slowdown I bet you know someone who has. Hard times have befallen people for lots of reasons from losing jobs to having their mortgage foreclosed. I know I personally lost my job at an online football shop a couple of weeks ago. It’s been pretty tough, but I know a lot of people have had it worse so I really can’t complain. Anyway ever since I lost my job I’ve been searching and trying to find something to fill the gap. The other day I figured I’d consult the Internet and searched “post free jobs offer” into google. To tell you the truth I didn’t figure a lot of results would come up, but I suppose with so many people looking there should be people trying to meet their demands.
The first job I was considering doing was one helping to install floating floors, mostly because it paid $20/hour. I looked at the job requirements and sadly it was a bit more then I could do. They were looking for someone who could do a lot of physical labour and that isn’t me. Heck I haven’t even lifted a hammer in like 10 years. I wasn’t disheartened and kept looking for more jobs on the net.
Next I decided I should look for jobs I’m more qualified for. I began my search by narrowing it down to only jobs in middle level management or I figured I might even take an administrative assistant job. There surprisingly were a lot of those listed on almost every site I looked at. When I first started that search I thought that jobs would be in high demand and thus there would be few of them available. I did some investigation into the jobs and they were paying a little less than I had hoped (around $13/hours for most) but hey, work is work.
I sent out applications to around 15 of the places I found on the internet and waited to hear back from them. Just around 2 weeks later (when I was starting to worry that no one was going to call) I heard back from 2 of the places in the same day. Naturally I was quite excited and did my best to prepared and get looking good for my job. The first interview didn’t go so well. I’d attribute that to mostly nerves, coupled with the fact that I hadn’t done a job interview in so long. The new interviews went a lot better and I really thought something could come from it. It wasn’t long before I heard back with offers from two places! I was so happy to hear back from them. In a week or so I start at my new job and I am so excited.

It’s a fact that people cheat in various situations. Some candidates, in a desperate but dishonest attempt to get what they want, just lie about themselves in their job application packages.
And sometimes it works… at least for a while. An executive fired this one manager when he found out, after 5 years, that he lied about his educational background on his resume. Apparently, the manager got the job he applied for and must be working fine since he lasted 5 years in the company. But when it was found out that he lied, he was terminated because that means he’s not trustworthy. In the end, it didn’t matter that he performed well on his job, just the fact that he lied on his resume, made him unworthy of trust and thus he a hard time looking for another job because of it.
There are two things you can get here:
1. Never lie about anything on your resume or recommendation letter. It may work in the short term, but it will probably come back to haunt you later.
2. You have to put some trust on the person assigned to review your application package. Reviewers know that people cheat, and they want to make sure you’re not a cheater before they accept you. You need to demonstrate that what you say is true, that you are trustworthy.
If your recommendation letter contains verifying data, that establishes trust. Recommendation letters are opinions of other people so they’re seen as more worthy of trust, in the reviewer’s eyes, as opposed to resumes, which the candidates wrote themselves. If facts are presented in your letters of recommendation that concur with what is on your resume, then the reviewer knows that they are true.
Also, you need to keep your recommendation letter as short as possible; one page is ideal. Conserve some space so you could allow a little bit of cross-checking.

What is the most important factor in determining whether your recommendation letter gets read?
It’s simple, really: length.
The shorter something is the easier it is to complete, and the more likely you will be to pick it up in the first place. When you have a book or a passage of text, you usually skim across the page first before you actually read it in depth, right? The more words you see in the page, the more likely you’d want to toss it out.
Now if you are stranded on a deserted island and you only have one book to read, chances are you’ll eventually make the time. But if you are swimming in applications, how likely are you to snuggle up to a four-page letter of recommendation in an 8-point font?
If you are a very conscientious person, you’ll probably read a few paragraphs from the letter, but if the candidate’s strong selling points are not evident in the first page, how likely are you to search for it in page 2 or 3?
Do you see the point? All too many candidates take the vomit-it-all approach. Because they don’t know what the company is looking for exactly, they play it safe by providing all kinds of data in the letter, in the hopes that all these will impress the boss. More often than not, this approach fails.
Reviewers are human too. Rarely would they have the patience to plow through the blocks of paragraphs in your recommendation letter to find out whether or not you have something to offer that they might need. Not when there are a bunch more applications waiting for them.
In this day and age, we are often swamped with lots and lots of data. If you have the aptitude of reduce big amounts of data into a brief but straight to the point summary, you’ll go far in the corporate world. So it’s not a surprise that companies look for this type of skill in their applicants.
